Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need help? Below you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions. If your question or answer is not listed, please email us at support@swimster.nl.

Technical requirement

  • From which operating system is KNZB Compete suitable?

The Compete app is available for iOS (v12 ) and Android (v7 ) and can be found in the app stores.

  • What do I need to work with KNZB Compete?

In addition to a smartphone and a laptop/desktop, a working internet connection is required.

  • What if the internet connection goes out?

The time on the phone continues to run. You can simply register the times and as soon as the internet connection is restored, these times will be transferred to the server.

  • What is the difference between the KNZB Compete app and KNZB Compete management portal?

With the Compete management portal you can manage the competition that you have uploaded from Splash Meet Manager and also read the results back into Splash. The management portal is mainly used by the jury and competition secretariat.

Mobile app

  • How to prevent the phone from not going into screen saver?

The app will not go into screen lock once it is opened.

  • How can notifications be prevented from appearing on the phone during the match?

The phone must be set to 'do not disturb' before the match starts, so that no notifications are received (see the manual for instructions).

  • How to prevent water from getting on the phone?

Waterproof cases are supplied in which you can hang your phone around your neck. Recent telephones are also (splash) waterproof.

  • What if a mobile phone breaks during a match or the battery runs out?"

There are a number of possibilities:

  • Is a combination of a stopwatch and the telephone also possible?

The stopwatch is used as a backup (end) time.

During the event

  • What roles are available?

The roles of Referee, Timekeeper, Turning Point Commissioner, Starter and Camp Judge are available in the app. The jury secretariat uses the management portal.

  • Can you also change jobs if your fellow official suddenly has to leave?

Yes, you can switch roles during the match. Make clear agreements about this.

  • How are disqualifications communicated?

In the Compete app, each official role can indicate one (or more) disqualifications using the "red card".

  • Who can report disqualifications?

Each official role can pass one (or more) disqualifications.

  • Can changes be made, for example merging series, name changes, etc?

    Yes, that's possible.

Timekeeper role

  • How do you register the intermediate and final times?

Using the button on the screen. The button on the screen is positioned and made large in such a way that it can be found 'blindly'. The button produces both an audible signal and a vibration. The position and size of the button has been extensively tested on various devices.

  • What happens if you accidentally press the interim button? can you still change this?

If you register the split time too early or too late, make sure that the next split or end time is correct. Do not confirm your time and indicate to the referee which split time is not correct.

  • If you forget to clock a split time, how do you solve it?

Then register a split time and do not confirm the time.

  • How does Compete sync time across all phones?

The system does this continuously and automatically using a generally recognized algorithm, so that no difference in times can arise.

  • How accurate are the recorded times?

Because the start time is always the same, the times are comparable to the backup times used during ETW. The internet connection has no influence on time registration.

  • Is there a backup time available?

We recommend using the stopwatch as a backup timekeeper.

Starter role

  • How does the start take place?

At the request of the referee, the Starter will start the series on his telephone. The series will start on all phones at the same time using a manual whistle and the start button.

  • In the event of a false start, can you immediately disqualify someone at a restart?

In the event of a false start, either the starter or the side/referee can give a disqualification report, also at the restart.

  • Can you restart a series?

Yes. The starter can stop the ongoing series and then 'restart' it. The starter can also decide to move on to the next series.

Referee and Judge

  • How do you enter the Order of Arrival?

    * The app only displays the courses of the relevant series.

  • How do you indicate Order of Arrival if you do not know the arrival of all lanes?

You can use a “?” If you are unsure of the Order of Arrival position. For example: 5, 6, ?, ?, 3, 1.

  • Do I enter the Order of Arrival directly in the app or first on paper?

It does indeed depend on specific series (close together or not) whether it can be entered directly into the app or whether it is first noted down manually on paper before entering it into the app.

Jury

  • How does the jury secretariat know what the Order of Arrival is?

In the Compete management portal, both the order based on times and the order based on observations (VvA) are visible in one screen:

  • What status can a series have?
Planned. The series has not yet started and is scheduled for a final result. The series has been swum, the times have been recorded and confirmed by the timekeepers. The Order of Arrival is complete and the times are in line with observation. There are no disqualifications. There are disqualifications. There are disqualifications for one or more VvA jobs that differ from times. The Order of Arrival is incomplete or not in line with the times. Result incomplete. not all times are recorded and/or confirmed by the timekeepers.
  • Can you load the results into Splash Meet Manager?

There is a fully automatic connection with Splash Meet Manager so that the times are read from KNZB Compete into Splash.

Other

  • Can swimmers or spectators also keep an eye on the times?

Of course. The unofficial times can be followed in real time via the Compete App.

  • What is the advantage of Compete over Splash Livetiming?

Splash Livetiming (and SplashMe) is semi-live. At Compete, the times are available in real time to the public and swimmers.

  • What is the advantage of Compete over Electronic Timekeeping?

The costs of purchasing and using Electronic Timekeeping (ETW) are of a completely different order than those of Compete. Compete digitizes the paper administration of the entire competition and comes close to ETW in terms of timekeeping.

  • Is there an extensive manual?

There are manuals and instruction card available on this website.

  • Will Compete also be included in jury courses and/or further training from now on?

Compete will be included in official courses and further training (in development).

  • Will there be any updates and new versions?

Certainly, Compete continues to develop. New updates and versions will be prepared regularly. These are then immediately available to everyone.

  • Is Compete safe?

Compete uses the data from Splash Meet Manager and complies with privacy legislation (GDPR). Compete meets all safety criteria and regulations set by Google, Apple and the KNZB.

New users

  • How do I register my association as a new user?

If you want to get started with KNZB Compete for swimming competitions, send an email to info@swimster.nl with your name and association.

  • How can I register as an official with KNZB Compete?

As an official, you can download the app from the app stores (Apple, Google) and then follow the registration process in the app (see also the manual).

  • Can I also test run KNZB Compete?

Certainly, after you have registered as an association, you can test run yourself by creating a test competition in Splash Meet Manager under your own association depot number (without the dash) and uploading it to KNZB Compete.
